Derek is 7

Derek.
I was the first to see him after he was born (other than his parents, of course).  I loved holding him when he was a baby and was always thrilled to babysit him.
He is my nephew, and he turned 7 years old today!  WOW.  Seven!
Here are a few photos from his party today…

Soon Baby’s Baby

Years ago before kids and spouses, in the boom of the dot com era, Soon and I used to hang out together in San Francisco.  He called me “Tao Baby” and I called him “Soon Baby”.  I have no idea why.  It’s just something that stuck.
So today’s shoot was of Soon Baby’s baby:  7-month old [...]

Deloitte’s Toast of the Town

Deloitte held its annual “Toast of the Town” event last night at the acclaimed 5A5 Steak Lounge in San Francisco.
The people, the speeches, the venue and the food were all fantastic.  It was a privilege to shoot this event!
Here are a few images to share from last night.  Enjoy!

Oh, the Food!
I’ll have to [...]

Baby George

Oh, was George cute!  Even though he had his first cold (Murphy’s Law, right?!) starting when he woke up this morning, he was in good spirits and never fussed once!
And just when I was thinking 7-month old George was being such a trooper to let us strip him down, move him around and make him [...]

Shadow Kids

I was sitting on the edge of my bed last night while feeding baby Ava.  And while staring at the mess of diapers and other baby goodies that were taking over my room, I noticed the pretty light adorned with stripes coming through the windows.  Some may see them as just “shadows”, but I saw [...]

Gradient Effect

Fun fun.  I experimented with a new tool in Photoshop:  the gradient tool.  And I’m loving it.  It isn’t to be overused, so beware.  But if used properly, it can make a simple image into a spectacular one!
For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, the gradient tool allows users to apply [...]

Helen and Psi’s Engagement

Today I met up with my June Bride and Groom to do a walk-thru of the venue.
Helen and Psi have such a beautiful story that touched me and reminded me a lot of my relationship with my own honey.

I won’t tell you too much because you will see them again in a month.
But I [...]

On-Location vs Studio Photography

Sometimes I think about having a studio for newborn and maternity portraits, but then I think it may not garner the kind of results I aim for when I do a shoot.
With a studio, you can control all the elements, so it would have the perfect lighting, the perfect temperature, the perfect background, and all [...]

Mother’s Day Lifestyle Shoot

It was a rainy day today, which was perfect for a lifestyle family photoshoot at someone’s home.
Today’s shoot was a feast for me.  We had set-up baby portraits, mom and baby intimate portraits, couple portraits, and editorial/photojournalistic shots of the family doing their ‘thing’!
Curious

Riccardo was wondering who this stranger was who entered their home and [...]

Nature Photography – Yay or Nay?

So I went to the Berkeley Rose Garden today.  It was a surprise trip for my daughter who loves flowers.
I wouldn’t normally be excited to shoot flowers and insects, but OY!  I’ve never gone to a garden with a macro lens before!
Having a macro lens opened up a whole new World for me.  And it [...]

Experiment: Low Light + No Time

So in my “extra time” (whatever that means), I did an experiment with my rings.  Please disregard how they haven’t been cleaned in about a year and the table I placed them on is scratched up & dusty!  Who has time to dust?!!
My experiment consisted of shooting my rings in terrible light and seeing what [...]

Family on Wheels

There were 3 kids at today’s lifestyle shoot:  Tyler (12), Courtney (9) and Trevor (6).  And then there were the parents, Ted and Caroline.

Cream in the Oreo Cookie
Let me start with a little story about Courtney…
Despite any drama that may have occurred, Courtney was always smiling ear-to-ear and trying her best to spread her cheer.  [...]

A Change Is Coming

For Elaine, Victor and Jason, a big change is coming…
In a few days, they will be adopting a baby girl!  So exciting!!!
So this morning’s photoshoot was to document their lives today.
Jason
Meet 19-month old Jason.  He is allegedly “shy”, according to his parents, but he played, laughed and ran around like a seasoned pro!
